Community Services Division
The Community Services Division provides direct services to individuals residing in Miami-Dade County having problems with substance abuse addiction, co-occurring disorders (combined psychiatric and substance abuse problems), homelessness, and high risk behavior for potential criminality. This is the County's community-based continuum providing assessment, referral, and substance abuse treatment division for the Department of Children and Families Southern Region. These services are provided in linguistically and culturally sensitive settings.

Substance Abuse Assessment and Referral Services
Central Intake Unit
Central Intake is the entry point for indigent substance abusers in Miami-Dade County. Referrals are received from police, Department of Corrections, Community-Based organizations within Miami-Dade County, families, and walk-ins. Approximately 3,200 individuals are assessed annually and provided referrals for treatment. Assessments include: medical and state-mandated evaluations, referral for detoxification, medical clearance and placement into numerous treatment milieus. In addition, assessment and placement services are provided for the Eleventh Circuit Court, including the State Attorney and Public Defender's Offices.

New Direction Residential Treatment Program
At the conclusion of the assessment at the Central Intake Unit and it is determined that the client's treatment needs encompass residential treatment, individuals referred to the residential substance abuse treatment program and are placed in either residential Level 2 (56 beds) or level 4 (31 beds) treatment services. These services are provided on a 24-hour/7-day week basis and include but are not limited to individual, group, and family therapy, psychological services, educational and vocational instruction, as well as, other ancillary services.
Stop Program
A component of the residential treatment program that is geared to the homeless substance abuser is the Stop Program; this is an acronym for Specialized Transitional Opportunity Program. This six month program provides twelve residential treatment beds serving both male and female individuals. This is an integral part of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust continuum.
Intensive Day/ Night Program
This component is a ten bed residential substance abuse treatment program designed to provide substance abuse treatment services to a female population who has been court ordered or determined to be high risk for criminal behavior as a result of their addiction.
