Successful Automation of Garbage and Trash Collection Service
It's official! The Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) completed its automated garbage collection efforts on July 24, 2007 by delivering EZGO waste carts to the final 400 households in our service area.
"We're proud to say that more than 300,000 households have received EZGO waste carts as part of our innovative program to provide a garbage collection service that is neater, cleaner, safer and more efficient for residents and employees alike," said DSWM Director Kathleen Woods-Richardson.
Replacing the traditional garbage service with an automated garbage collection service has been an ongoing priority for the Department. The Department's operations and administrative divisions have worked tirelessly over the past three years to bring automation to the homes of our waste collection customers.
While automating garbage collection in our service area is complete, we will continue to adjust, monitor and improve every facet of automated collection. For example, we are working diligently to respond to residents' requests for additional EZGO carts and the smaller 64-and 35-gallon carts. Providing these service options allows the DSWM to customize the program to meet the waste collection needs of our customers.
As with any new program or service, there are always lessons to learn and ways to do an even better job. The DSWM is committed to refining and improving our automated waste collection service to ensure that we are "Delivering Excellence Every Day" to our valued customers.
Here are some important tips you must remember for smooth EZGo Cart service:
- All waste must go inside the EZ Go Waste Cart and the lid must be closed. Items must not be stacked on top of the cart. Additional bags left on the curbside will not be picked up.
- On pick-up days, the EZ Go Waste Cart must be placed within 3 feet of the street and at least 5 feet from your mailbox, parked cars, poles, recycling cart or other obstacles.
- The wheels of your cart must face your home.
- The EZ Go Waste Cart must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day.
- You can place household garbage, as well as yard trimmings such as grass and leaves in your EZ Go Waste Cart. Do not include items such as rocks, dirt, building debris and flammables.
- To keep your EZ Go Waste Cart clean, we encourage you to place garbage in plastic bags and to rinse out your cart as needed.
- Most residents will not require more than one cart. However, should you need an additional cart, it will be provided at a cost of $50 per cart.
- If you are disabled and cannot move your EZ Go Waste Cart, please call the Service Development Division at 305-594-1500 to apply for “special assistance” waste collection service.
