    Bulky Waste Frequently Asked Questions

    Who is eligible to receive bulky waste collection service?

    Bulky waste collection service is available to residents of unincorporated Miami-Dade County and residents of the municipalities of Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest and Sunny Isles Beach. This service is not available in the city of Sweetwater.

    How do I request a bulky waste pickup?

    Before putting furniture, tree cuttings and other bulky waste items at the curbside, you should schedule a bulky waste pickup by calling 3-1-1 or request a bulky waste pickup online.

    How many pickups per year do I receive? How do I check my bulky waste availability without requesting a pickup?

    Each household receives two (2) bulky waste pickups during the fiscal year (October 1 - September 30) of up to 25 cubic yards each.

    • If the bulky waste pile exceeds 25 cubic yards, single-family residents can choose to combine the two available bulky waste pickups into one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards. Doing so will exhaust the available pickups for the fiscal year.

    Duplexes are entitled to four pickups of up to 25 cubic yards each during the fiscal year (October 1 - September 30).

    •  Duplex residents have the option to combine up to four bulky waste pickups into one pickup of up to 100 cubic yards. Anything in excess of 25 cubic yards per pickup will exhaust the next available pickup. This means that if you set out 35 cubic yards, the additional 10 yards will exhaust pickups #1 and # 2. You will then have two pickups remaining. 
    To check your bulky waste availability (how many bulky waste pickups you have left for the fiscal year) without having to request a pickup, you can call 3-1-1 or check the bulky waste pickup online application.

    If I am a new homeowner and I never requested a bulky waste pickup, am I automatically entitled to a bulky waste pickup?

    If the previous owner did not use the bulky service for the current fiscal year, you are entitled to two (2) bulky waste pickups (four for duplexes). However, if the previous owner used one (1) 25-cubic yard pickup for the current fiscal year, you are entitled only to one (1) pickup of 25 cubic yards (three for duplexes). You will be entitled to two (2) pickups of 25 cubic yards (four for duplexes) at the beginning of the next fiscal year (October 1).  

    If I don't use my pickup, will it roll over to the next year?

    Bulky waste pickups not used during the fiscal year do not roll over to the next year.

    Where should I place my bulky waste for pickup?

    Trash should be placed at the curbside adjacent to your residence within 10 feet of the street and at least five feet from mailboxes, parked cars, trees, utility poles, sprinkler heads and other obstructions that might be damaged by the collection equipment. A 15-foot clearance is required from the ground to the lowest hanging tree branch or power line.

    How long will it take for my trash to be picked up?

    Your trash will be picked up within one (1) to eight (8) days from the date you indicate you are ready. Your trash must be placed at the curbside by the day you say it will be ready for pickup, as the collection could occur as early as day 1.

    What types of items are acceptable and not acceptable for bulky waste pickup?

    Furniture such as mattresses, sofas, chairs, tables, cabinets and carpets (must be rolled)

    Garbage (food and kitchen waste)

    White goods or appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, freezers (refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed), water heaters, washing machines, dryers.

    Large Tires (48" or larger)

    House fixtures such as kitchen cabinets, bathtubs, sinks, vanities

    Rock, dirt or sand

    Fences (chain link and picket fences must be rolled and no higher than five feet)

    Free-flowing liquids

    Tree cuttings (must be no more than five feet in length)

    Oil-based paint

    Construction and demolition materials to include steel, concrete, glass, brick, asphalt, roofing material, lumber, drywall and tile (limited to less than one cubic yard, a pile slightly larger than a washing machine). Demolition

    Household chemicals

    Electronic equipment such as TVs and computers (residents are strongly encouraged to take all electronic equipment to one of the two Home Chemical Collection Centers or one of the selected TRCs that accept electronic equipment.     Auto parts

    Disabled power tools such as lawnmowers (they must be completely free of fluids such as motor oil or gasoline).

    Central air units

    Tires, with the following limitations and conditions:

    • No more than four (4) tires, without rims
    • Tires must be smaller than 48" in diameter
    • Tires must not be mixed in with your bulky waste pile but rather they should be placed to the side of the pile so the driver can see them

    Fiberglass used for insulation

     

    Any single item weighing more than 150 pounds

    What happens if I have more than 25 cubic yards of trash than I’m allowed for pick up?

    • If you have two pickups available and your first scheduled pickup is more than 25 cubic yards, you can combine the two pickups into one. Doing so will exhaust the entire 50-cubic yard limit available to you for the fiscal year.
    •  If you have only one (1) 25-cubic yard pickup available or you have two (2) pickups and only wish to use one (1), you can:
      • Take the excess trash to one of the Department's 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers.
      • Inquire about the Department's paid bulky waste service. The cost for this service is $23 per cubic yard, and there is a minimum 5-cubic yard charge of $115. An approval formPDF signed by the property owner is required for removal of excess bulky waste.
      • Contact a private hauler to remove the excess trash for a fee. 

    How do I dispose of my bulky waste after I have used my two bulky waste pickups for the fiscal year?

    You can dispose of your trash at one of the 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers. You can also contact a private hauler or the DSWM to arrange a pickup for a fee.
