Efforts to strengthen the County’s economy include the attraction, retention, and expansion of businesses through a partnership with the Beacon Council, encouragement of international trade, and special programs for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The unemployment rate continues to decline.



  • Through a public-private partnership with the Beacon Council, 21 economic development projects were completed: 17 businesses opened offices and 4 local companies expanded in Miami-Dade County, resulting in 1,159 new jobs.

  • South Florida Workforce placed 16,255 Miami-Dade County residents in jobs, including 3,438 in jobs earning a living wage of $11.76 or higher.

  • The Department of Business Development
    increased the number of certified small businesses by 11 percent. The County awarded 880 projects to eligible small businesses, an increase of 369 or 72 percent from the previous year.

  • The County's largest economic engines, Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami, served more passengers:
    • Airport:
      more than 32 million travelers - an increase of one million.
    • Port of Miami:
      3.7 million total passengers - up by 100,000.




More than 32 million travelers flew out of Miami International Airport in 2006.
