Returning an Adopted Pet

Adopted animals may be returned to the shelter for a refund or exchange within 30 days if the animal has a medical condition that was not disclosed at the time of adoption and the condition is confirmed in a written evaluation by a certified veterinarian. The other case where an owner is eligible for a refund or exchange occurs when an animal dies within 30 days of adoption and is returned to Animal Services deceased.

Adopters assume medical and financial responsibility for the animals. For more details on adopter responsibilities, refer to the adoption contract. If after adoption the animal becomes ill, the owner is responsible for its care. Animal Services will not provide medical care in this situation.

If the pet is returned for any other reason by its owner, the animal is considered a surrendered pet and the owner is not entitled to a refund or exchange.
