Free Dog Training Classes Offered at Animal Services Department

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Thanks to the support and commitment of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (ASD) in coordination with the South Florida Dog Trainer's Networking Group will be providing free dog training classes at the ASD shelter located at 7401 NW 74 Street, Miami, FL  33166.  This service will be provided once a month.

There will be two training sessions offered on Saturday, November 19.  Session one, "Ask the Trainer", is for dog owners to ask useful questions about their dogs.  This session is for owners without dogs.  Session two includes actual obedience training of dogs with their owners.  The curriculum for the obedience training class is modeled off of the Association of Pet Dog Trainer's (APDT) C.L.A.S.S. program, which stands for Canine Life and Social Skills. C.L.A.S.S., through its evaluation, curriculum, and training resources, advocates the use of reward-based training. Positive, reward-based training minimizes the use of punishment and is fun for the owner and dog.

"It is important that owners understand the needs of their dog, and good training goes a long way towards surrender prevention for behavioral reasons.  A well trained dog usually means happy people and a happy relationship between owner and pet.  The department feels it is important to provide access to this service to our community and we are glad the South Florida Dog Trainer's Network has volunteered their time to help us accomplish this goal and teach Miami-Dade's dog owners about reward-based dog training," said Alex Muñoz, Director, Miami-Dade Animal Services Department.

For more information and to participate in the training, please contact 311 to reserve a spot as training is on a first come basis.

Miami-Dade Animal Services is responsible for enforcing Chapter 5 of the Miami-Dade County Code, as well as Florida Statutes 828.12, which deals primarily with animal cruelty issues. Unlike private shelters that have limitations on the number of pets they accept, Animal Services accepts all dogs and cats. Each year, the shelter receives between 30,000 to 36,000 pets. The goal of Animal Services is to reunite lost pets with their families or find life-long homes for as many animals as possible. Related links: Miami-Dade Animals or call 311.
