Miami-Dade County Animal Services to hold pet fostering and volunteer recruitment expo at the 2014 Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition
(Miami, March 12, 2014) – Miami-Dade County Animal Services (ASD) will hold a Pet Foster parent and Volunteer recruitment “expo” at the 2014 Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition (also known for generations as The Youth Fair) agricultural pavilion on the following weekend dates, March 14, 15, 16; March 21, 22, 23; and March 28, 29, 30 to promote the shelter’s Foster Parent and Volunteer programs. The Foster Parent program helps reduce the amount of time an animal is at the shelter waiting to be adopted. It is also critical for the survival of animals with special needs including nursing moms with newborn puppies or kittens, abandoned puppies and kittens who need bottle feeding or who are too young to be adopted or pets who may need to recover from minor medical conditions. Some animals need only a few days while others may need a few weeks or more. Spending time with humans also helps to socialize the animals resulting in happier and healthier candidates for adoption. The shelter’s Volunteer Program offers pet lovers the opportunity to act on their passion for animals by making their shelter stay more comfortable and working to facilitate their adoption. Volunteer positions include, cat socializers, customer service greeters, bathers, adoption counselors, special events staff, adoption runners and even “Pet Pals” to entertain, play with and socialize with the pets. “Participating in traditional and beloved community events like the Fair is an important part of our community outreach grassroots efforts,” said Alex Muñoz, Director of Miami-Dade County Animal Services. “Pet foster parents and volunteers make a huge difference in the quality of a pet’s life during their stay at the shelter. We, and most importantly, the animals who receive their love and attention are extremely grateful for their generosity and dedication,” added Muñoz. ASD is working to build a No Kill community. ASD has developed partnerships with over 70 rescue groups.
