Art in Public Places (APP) staff continues to work in collaboration with the stadium developer and the three commissioned artists -- Red Grooms (from New York, NY), who will create the home run feature ($2.5 million); Carlos Cruz-Diez (from Paris, France), who will create the stadium entrance paving design ($1.5 million); and Daniel Arsham/Snarkitecture, Inc. (from Brooklyn, NY/Miami, FL), who will create the plaza roof column lighting and commemorative marker ($1.3 million).
Snarkitecture, Inc. has begun fabricating both the commemorative marker project and lighting system for the stadium columns. Cruz-Diez has finalized the design for the paving system, which coordinates with the City's approved plan for the design of the West Plaza, and has submitted the 100 percent construction document package. Artist Red Grooms has completed design for the home run feature, a sculptural diorama that depicts an elaborate tableau of stylized water, clouds, pelicans, marlins and palm trees. At the April 12, 2011 meeting of the APP Trust, Grooms, along with representatives from Uni-systems and the Marlins, presented a conceptual video that detailed the visual and mechanical aspects of the home run feature.
In collaboration with the City, APP staff has been working with artist Christian Moeller on the four main entryways of the ballpark garages. Moeller's work will incorporate approximately 8,900 square feet of the garage façade and will not interfere with the City's advertising requirement. Moeller's concept is to involve residents in generating photographic images of children peering through a ballpark fence, which the artist then will "translate" into large-scale "murals" that will cover the sides of the garages facing the stadium.
The murals are created as "bit-map" paintings through a technique developed by Moeller that involves affixing a matrix of plastic discs on fencing; the works are produced with digitally programmed machinery owned by the artist. On June 5, 2011 the artist held a casting call in Miami and selected community members to participate in a photo session. The images gathered from this session will be used to create the "murals."
