As Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, it is my pleasure to bring you the latest edition of the Board of County Commissioners Combined Newsletter.

From public transportation to economic development to resilient solutions, my colleagues and I have been working on a wide range of issues over the last few months to improve the lives of our residents. The County Commission on April 10 approved a resolution co-prime sponsored by Chairman Bovo and Commissioner Rebeca Sosa to establish an agreement with FPL to reclaim wastewater for clean energy uses and to address problems with the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant’s overheated cooling canal system.

County Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. hosted his 4th annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Norman and Jean Reach Park in Palm Springs North. Many families enjoyed free rides and entertainment from local school dance teams.

Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson was the prime sponsor of Miami-Dade County’s Small Business Program ordinance, which requires use of the County’s web-based system for county contracts, provides for application of certain goals for projects with estimated values exceeding $700,000, and amends Miami-Dade County Advisory Board duties regarding the Small Business Enterprise Program.

Vice Chairwoman Audrey M. Edmonson and staff once again participated in the annual effort to clean up our shores and islands at the 36th annual Baynanza at Pelican Harbor and at Morningside Park, both in District 3.

Cities and counties in Florida have passed legislation challenging the state’s preemption on the regulation of firearms and ammunition. Commissioner Jordan sponsored legislation that requests the county attorney to research legal theories and causes of action concerning the preemption, and further authorizes the county attorney to take legal action should such analysis present a viable claim.

More than 600 residents packed into the Betty T. Ferguson amphitheater for Music in the Park on May 4 in Miami Gardens as Mustafa on Sax featuring Groove Box and famed steel pan jazz musician Othello Molineaux captivated the crowd.

Since 2015, District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime has been a staunch supporter of the annual grant funding for the Miami-Dade County Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP), formerly known as the Youth Summer Job Program. As a co-prime sponsor of the legislation providing the grant funding for the 2018 SYIP, Commissioner Monestime continues his support and commitment.

Commissioner Jean Monestime, in partnership with Papa Keith 4 People Matter, hosted the People Matter Pop-Up Fest for Peace on April 21 at Little River Park to bring people together for one day without any gun violence or negativity.

Commissioner Heyman joined Chairman Bovo in sponsoring an urging to Congress to pass the Holocaust Insurance Accountability Act of 2017. Senate Bill 258 and House Resolution 762 would allow a beneficiary of a Holocaust-era insurance policy to bring a civil action in a U.S. District Court against an insurer for a covered policy to recover proceeds or enforce any rights under the policy.

Commissioner Heyman recently hosted a strategic meeting with all jurisdictions affected by the Northeast Corridor. Members of the roundtable discussed how to efficiently move commuters by rail instead of cars in road traffic.

Commissioner Rebeca Sosa recently sponsored the creation of the Elder Affairs Advisory Board tasked with making recommendations to enhance the quality of life of our community’s senior population. “Seniors impact our lives in an incredibly positive way. Our community is made better by elevating their voice. Through this board we will continue to address the most important issues affecting seniors and give them a more active role in local government.”

Commissioner Rebeca Sosa recently joined the organization Amigos for Kids to support the “There’s No Excuse for Child Abuse!” initiative to raise awareness and highlight the need to combat child abuse.

Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez sponsored a resolution allocating $1 million from the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond to Community Health of South Florida, Inc. to expand its health care facility on Grand Avenue. This Coconut Grove facility will be remodeled and expanded to meet the growing need in the community and will be designed as a “green building.”

Commissioner Suarez spoke at KROMA to 25 Civil Engineer students from FAU on April 28 about affordable housing development in Coconut Grove. The FAU engineering students, who were enrolled in a year-long design course, prepared building concepts for actual parcels in the West Grove.

The Miami-Dade County Commission unanimously supported Commissioner Levine Cava’s legislation allocating $1.6 million for the rebirth of the Redland Farm Life School. The historic building will be transformed into the Redland Farm Life Center, bringing more economic development to South Dade. Plans include a culinary kitchen for future chefs and a production facility for small farmers looking to diversify.

County Commissioner Levine Cava partnered with Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade to sponsor National Rebuilding Day on April 28. Nearly 200 volunteers joined forces to make critical repairs to 17 homes of veterans and seniors, and to help revitalize the Leisure City neighborhood.

Commissioner Dennis C. Moss recently sponsored a resolution allowing for funds from the Biscayne Bay Environmental Enhancement Trust Fund to be used for artificial reefs and mooring buoys in the coastal waters of Miami-Dade County beyond Biscayne Bay.

Neat Streets Miami, County Commissioner Dennis C. Moss and the Board of County Commissioners gave a special presentation on April 10 to 16 local student artists in recognition of their creative contributions to the 14th annual Clean-Up & Green-Up Poster and Video Contest.

Commissioner Souto unveiled a beautiful new bronze sculpture of Ronald Reagan with a horse at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park on April 13, to coincide with the opening day of the annual Miami International Agriculture, Horse and Cattle Show.

Commissioner Martinez sponsored a resolution approving the proposed development of a park and ride/bus terminal facility, known as Tamiami Station, to be located at Southwest 8th Street and 147th Avenue. The station will serve commuters utilizing a planned express bus route along the Dolphin Expressway. It also features an elevated platform design to accommodate future Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit buses.

On May 9, Commissioner Martinez hosted the annual student art exhibition “Creative Visions 2018” at Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum. This exhibition showcases the creative talents of District 11 students to encourage fledgling young artists and provide a venue to display their artwork

Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution urging Congress to protect U.S. military personnel and their survivors during future government shutdowns. The resolution urges Congress to approve legislation appropriating funds needed to pay military personnel in the event of government shutdowns and providing a permanent appropriation for payment of federal death benefits to survivors of deceased members of the uniformed services.

Commissioner Diaz, along with the County Parks Department and FPL, broke ground on a linear park with landscaping and a walking/biking trail along 136th Court between Southwest 6th Street and Northwest 12th Street. It is set to be completed in the fall of 2019.
