As Director, Mr. Gonzalez is involved in all building code related issues, which includes directing and coordinating, investigative activities, the uniform application of the building code throughout the county, countywide oversight of building code administration, the Code Compliance Specialist Section, the Contractor Enforcement Section, the Contractor Licensing Section and the world renowned Miami-Dade County Product Control Division.

In addition, Mr. Gonzalez serves as the Secretary to the Board of Rules and Appeals, the Construction Trade Qualifying Board and the Unsafe Structures Board. Mr. Gonzalez is also the Countywide Chief Code Compliance Officer.

Mr. Gonzalez’s more than twenty-five year professional career in the construction industry has included the construction of high-rise buildings, large commercial shopping centers and numerous residential projects. In the capacity of Director of Construction for an international construction firm, he managed and completed many construction projects throughout Miami Dade, Broward and Monroe County.

After leaving private industry, Mr. Gonzalez brought his vast knowledge and experience to the public sector when he joined the Miami-Dade County Building Code Compliance Office in 1994. From his position as a Building Code Compliance Officer, Mr. Gonzalez was called upon to assume the position of Chief of the Code Compliance Division; this new challenge brought increased duties and greater responsibilities. Mr. Gonzalez’s successful tenure as Division Chief and his tireless efforts to improve construction standards, county-wide, resulted in him being named as Director of the Building Code Compliance Office in May 2002.

Recently, Governor Charlie Crist reinstated Mr. Gonzalez to a four-year term as Commissioner to the Florida Building Commission. The Florida Building Commission is the administrative body that modifies, updates, interprets and maintains the Florida Building Code. The South Florida Building Officials’ Council designated Mr. Gonzalez as the “Building Official of the Year” in 2002.

Mr. Gonzalez and the Building Code Compliance Office’s efforts relating to hurricane code mitigation and the protection of residents living in hurricane prone regions were recognized by the National Hurricane Center. Culminating on April 17, 2003 when the National Hurricane Center awarded their “Outstanding Achievement Award” to the Building Code Compliance Office.

Mr. Gonzalez’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from the University of Miami and a Masters Degree in Construction Management from the Florida International University. Additionally, Mr. Gonzalez possesses a license as a State of Florida Professional Engineer, a State General Contractor license, a Building Code Administrator license and a Building Inspector and Plans Examiner license.

Mr. Gonzalez is happily married to his high school sweetheart Olga and they are proud parents of three daughters. Mr. Gonzalez is a strong proponent of the philosophy that a healthy body translates into a healthy mind and keeps fits through regular exercise.
