Currently, Dr. Bruce Hyma is the Chief Medical Examiner and Director of the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner Department. He was an Associate Medical Examiner in the Medical Examiner Department. Additionally, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Hyma has been with the Medical Examiner Department since 1987. He came to the Department as a forensic pathology fellow and joined the medical staff in 1988.
Muskegon, Michigan is the hometown where Dr. Hyma was born and raised. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1978 from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1982, he received his Medical Doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. An additional year was spent in Detroit doing an internship in medicine and surgery at Saint John Hospital before moving to Rochester, Minnesota. Four years were spent in Rochester at the Mayo Clinic in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Concurrent with his duties as a pathology resident, Dr. Hyma was a Deputy Olmstead County Coroner. From Minnesota, Dr. Hyma came to Miami to complete his education in forensic pathology.
Dr. Hyma is married and has three children. His wife is a nurse consultant for a private law firm.
