Bill Johnson is the Port Director at the Port of Miami. Mr. Johnson has over twenty-seven years of management experience with Miami-Dade County government and has served as a senior member of the County Manager's executive staff since January 1995. Over the years, having held several senior positions in the Manager's Office, including Special Assistant, Senior Assistant, Transportation Manager, and Assistant County Manager, his responsibilities have included oversight of County's Aviation Department, Department of Procurement Management, the Department of Business Development, Miami-Dade Transit as well as others, and as liaison with the Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation (District Six).
For eight years, commencing in 1998, Bill Johnson had oversight of the Port of Miami and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. He worked closely with the directors of these important community assets to improve operations, streamline costs, enhance revenues, and, overall, enhance efficiency.
Prior to becoming Port Director, Mr. Johnson had direct oversight of the County’s Building Department, Building Code Compliance, Planning and Zoning, and the Office of Capital Improvements, which includes the $2.9 billion Building Better Communities Bond Program.
Mr. Johnson began his professional career at Miami-Dade County as a management intern in 1980. Since that time, he has held a number of management positions, including Director of the County's Contract Coordination Office. From 1994 to 1998, Mr. Johnson was Chairperson of the Miami-Dade County Review Committee, responsible for designation of minority and small business measures on most County contracts.
In 1997, Mr. Johnson was appointed as the County's representative for the American Airlines Arena project, where he worked closely with the Miami Heat Basketball Team and their development company in overseeing the construction of the $250 million complex. In October 2003, he was tasked to resolve problems plaguing the Performing Art Center project, where he successfully restructured a completion plan for this state-of-the arts complex, endorsed by the Performing Arts Center Trust and approved by the Board of County Commissioners in July 2004. He also served as the County's lead negotiator with the U.S. Department of Defense for the conveyance of 600 acres of land surrounding the Homestead Air Force Base, and served as the County’s point person on all military-related issues.
Over the past seven years, Mr. Johnson has also served as Miami-Dade County's liaison to the Performing Arts Center Trust, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust, The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade's Economic Development Agency, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the various Chambers of Commerce in Miami-Dade County. As the County Manager's liaison to the Jay Malina International Trade Consortium, Mr. Johnson has participated in numerous trade missions worldwide. Known as a problem-solver, and for his dedication to finding solutions to difficult government issues, Mr. Johnson earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Tennessee. A native of Akron, Ohio, Mr. Johnson has lived in Miami-Dade County for the last twenty-seven years.
