José Cintrón, Director
José Cintrón was appointed as Director of the Miami-Dade County's Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) on December 26, 2006. He brings with him over 30 years of experience in local and federal government and has developed a deep understanding of housing and economic development issues.
Prior to joining the County, Mr. Cintrón served, for a time, as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Housing with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (US HUD) where he oversaw the reorganization of HUD's public housing efforts nationwide. He also served as HUD's Regional Director for New York and New Jersey and subsequently became the HUD State Coordinator for the State of Florida based in the Miami HUD Office.
Mr. Cintrón, during the period 1976 to 1989, held several positions with the City of New York's office of the Mayor, including serving as the Chair of the Board of Estimate on behalf of Mayor Edward Koch. He also served as Assistant Commissioner for Community Development and Neighborhood Preservation in the City's Housing Department. From 1989 to 1994 Mr. Cintrón worked with New York City's School Construction Authority as Vice President of Program Coordination and external Affairs. He was a senior executive in charge of a citywide capital construction program with a $1 billion annual budget.
As the Director of OCED, Mr. Cintrón will oversee the department's operations including, utilization of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Home Investment Partnership (HOME), Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG), and other federal and state program funds.
Mr. Cintrón is a native of New York City. He graduated from Fordham University and holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in American History. He also attended Harvard University in the JFK School of Government where he received certification from the Senior Executives in Government Programs.
