Fire Chief William W. Bryson oversees the largest fire-rescue department in the southeastern United States, with an annual budget of more than $352 million. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) is staffed by more than 2,400 employees, almost 2,000 of whom are uniformed firefighters. The men and women of MDFR serve more than 1.8 million residents, businesses and visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.Fire Chief Bryson is a 37-year South Florida fire-rescue veteran. Chief Bryson began his career in 1975 at the City of Miami Fire-Rescue Department. He worked through the ranks to become the Fire Chief from 2000 through 2009. At the City, he served as a driver engineer instructor, a shift commander for the hazardous materials team, a station commander, Chief of Technical Services and the Deputy Fire Chief.
During his tenure as the City of Miami Fire Chief, the city earned a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Organization. He also served as President of the Miami Association of Firefighters IAFF Local 587 from 1990 to 1996. Fire Chief Bryson has been recognized for excellence in fire-rescue service administration. In 2008, he was named the Metropolitan Fire Chief of the Year by his national peers.
In addition to his extensive on-the-job experience, Fire Chief Bryson has completed numerous professional courses at the National Fire Academy, as well as courses in hazardous materials, management, and contracts.
Fire Chief Bryson has been an active member of our community acting as a Trustee for the United Way of Miami-Dade, a member of Role Model 5000, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Labor Research & Studies at FIU. Fire Chief Bryson also served as a member of the Governor's Southeast Domestic Security Task Force, created after the attacks on 9/11 to provide a response to any weapons of mass destruction or terrorist incidents that may occur within the state.
Fire Chief Bryson was raised in Miami Shores and is a graduate of North Miami Senior High School. He received a Bachelors of Science from the University of Florida.
