Dr. Bruce A. Hyma - Director
Bruce A. Hyma, M.D. is the Director and Chief Medical Examiner of the Medical Examiner Department. Miami-Dade is also known as District 11 in the state Medical Examiner System, so Dr. Hyma also has the title of District 11 Medical Examiner. Concurrent with his duties as Miami-Dade's Medical Examiner, he holds a commission seat on the state Medical Examiners Commission of which he is currently the chairman. Additionally, Dr. Hyma holds a volunteer faculty appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor of Pathology at the Miller School of Medicine of the University of Miami.
Dr. Hyma was born and raised in Muskegon, MI. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and his Medical Doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. An internship in medicine and surgery was completed at Saint John Hospital in Detroit. Following his internship, Dr. Hyma completed a 4-year residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minesota. Concurrent with his resident duties, he was a deputy Olmstead County Coroner.
From Minnesota, Dr. Hyma came to Miami in 1987 to complete his medical education in the Medical Examiner Department's forensic pathology fellowship program. After completing his formal education, Dr. Hyma joined the department as an Associate/Assistant Medical Examiner. He was promoted to Department Director in 2001.
