Hampton House to become new Community Center & Museum

The 1950's era motel will be restored for future use as an educational center and museum. The Building Better Communities Program is contributing $4.7 million to the historic preservation project. Longtime efforts to preserve the Historic Hampton House, a once popular gathering place for black musicians and celebrities, received a boost this month when Miami-Dade unveiled plans to restore the 1950s era two-story motel as part of a $4.7 million allocation from the County's Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond (GOB) Program.

Building Better Communities Moves to Next Phase

Now in its fifth year, the Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond Program is moving into a new phase. The County sold the remaining 2008 Series Bonds in the amount of $203.8 million generating approximately $200.3 million for projects over the next year.  Coupled with the bonds sold last year, the County has now sold the entire $350 million in Series 2008 bonds authorized by the Board of County Commissioners.  These funds are earmarked to fund a new roster of 270 projects as approved by voters in the 2004 bond referendum. The new Annual Report provides an update on the bond program highlighting both completed projects, and those now underway, at hundreds of worksites throughout the community.

Economic Stimulus Ordinance Supports Building Industry

The national economic slowdown and housing market has significantly impacted the local building industry with a loss of more than 10,000 jobs over the last year.  In an effort to boost employment, Miami-Dade County has created an Economic Stimulus Package that could inject millions into the South Florida economy over the next two years.

The Economic Stimulus Ordinance proposed by Mayor Carlos Alvarez, and approved by the Board of County Commissioners on July 17, 2008, is intended to expedite the process of awarding contracts for County capital improvement projects in order to get already funded projects underway more quickly. The ordinance, put in place for the next two years, streamlines the bid award process and fast-tracks more than $600 million in projects over the next 12-18 months. The new contracting eliminates some steps and consolidates others.

The Office of Capital Improvements, which is overseeing the initiative, estimates that the process will reduce the County contracting process by as much as four months.
