Building Officials

According to FloridaStatute 468 the term Building Official means any of those employees of municipal or county governments with building construction regulation responsibilities who are charged with the responsibility for direct regulatory administration or supervision of plan review, enforcement, or inspection of building construction, erection, repair, addition, remodeling, demolition, or alteration projects that require permitting indicating compliance with the various construction codes.

Chapter 8 Article II of the Code of Miami-Dade County contains additional information regarding the powers, duties, qualifications and appointment of Building Officials. There are currently 33 Building Officials certified by the Board of Rules and Appeals. View the current Building Officials List PDF  for Miami-Dade County.

Building Officials Meeting

The Building Officials’ meeting was established by Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs with the intention of maintaining uniformity in the enforcement of the Building Code throughout all incorporated and unincorporated areas of Miami Dade County. These meetings are conducted each month by Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs and serve as a forum for maintaining open communication between Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs and the various Miami-Dade County Building Departments. The meetings are designed for Building Officials or their representatives and are conducted at Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs's conference rooms I & J. Permitting, Environment and Regulatory Affairs staff presents topics of interest, with a format that allows for open discussion of relative building code issues. Updates on the latest BORA meeting and  Florida Building Commission meetings are also provided.

Hurricane Mitigation Retrofit Requirements Rule Filed

 

The Florida Building Commission's mitigation measures rule was filed with the Department of State on October 25, 2007 and according to Chapter 2007-126, Laws of Florida, will "take immediate effect".

On October 18, 2007 the Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) provided an interpretation regarding the applicability of Florida Statute 553.844 and issues involving secondary water barrier requirements

Check with your municipal Building Official to determine what additional documentation, substantiation, permits and inspections are necessary to comply with these new Hurricane Mitigation Retrofit requirements.
