Miami-Dade County Continues Senior Citizen Outreach Campaign

Help Spread the Rumor, Be a Smart Consumer

(MIAMI, June 11, 2012) –In an effort to create consumer protection awareness among the elderly population, the Business Affairs Division of the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) continues its senior citizen outreach campaign titled “HELP SPREAD THE RUMOR, BE A SMART CONSUMER.”

The outreach event will take place Tuesday, June 12, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Pinecrest Branch Library, located at 5835 SW 111 Street.

Consumer Protection Mediation Analysts will provide the seniors with valuable information on identity theft, fraud and consumer protection laws.  In addition, seniors will learn of proactive measures they can take to protect themselves from becoming victims of serious economic crimes.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports that 27.3 million Americans became the victims of identity theft in the past five years.  Seniors continue to be a rapidly increasing segment of the population target for con artists and thieves.

The aim of the senior citizen outreach campaign is to empower all seniors in Miami-Dade County with the knowledge they need to prevent them from becoming victims.
