Proper Digging and Planting Workshop

Learn about Sunshine 811

(MIAMI, September 7, 2012) - The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF-IFAS), Miami-Dade County Cooperative Extension Service, Sunshine 811, and the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are hosting a workshop on proper digging and planting on Thursday, September 13, 2012.  The same workshop will also be offered in Spanish on Thursday September 27, 2012.  Both workshops will be held at the John D. Campbell Agricultural Center Auditorium located in Homestead, Florida from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

When a person starts a digging project, they run the risk of damaging underground utility lines, which may cause serious injury or harm to those in close proximity. Additionally, it may knock out power, phone, cable or gas to an entire neighborhood. An individual can be held financially responsible for repairs if they don’t call 811. However, if they call 811 before they begin their digging project, the utility company will determine the location of any underground utility line and mark their location. Once the lines are marked, you can begin to dig, but always dig with care.
