Two Florida Master Naturalist courses coming to Miami-Dade during Spring Break


(MIAMI, February 24, 2014) – Miami-Dade County’s UF/IFAS Cooperative Extension Program, in partnership with instructors from the historic Deering Estate at Cutler (a Miami-Dade County park) and the Tropical Audubon Society will be hosting two Florida Master Naturalist special topics courses this March. The three day adult education courses provide students with a hands-on educational approach that includes presentations, field trips, discussion and practical experience. 

Wildlife Monitoring (March 24-26, 2014) is designed to provide training in principles and commonly used techniques for surveying and monitoring wildlife. This course will focus on surveying and monitoring: mammals, birds, and herpetofauna. Field visits will include snake monitoring at The Deering Estate at Cutler, kayak-based bird sampling at Pelican Harbor Marina, and an introduction to marine and terrestrial mammal surveys at the Doc Thomas House.

Environmental Interpretation (March 27-29, 2014) is designed to make participants better environmental interpreters and educators. This course will focus on: interpretive presentations, guided interpretive programs, and interpretive displays. Field visits will include The Deering Estate at Cutler, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, Everglades National Park, the Miami Science Museum, and the Doc Thomas House.
