Miami-Dade County $1.00 taxicab fuel surcharge ended on October 20

(MIAMI, October 21, 2014)  – The Miami-Dade County Regulatory and Economic Resources Department announced that the $1.00 fuel surcharge that had been added to each taxicab trip throughout the county ended on Monday, October 20, 2014. The surcharge was established to help taxicab drivers offset the high cost of gasoline. The surcharge was established by Ordinance 08-71 which passed by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on June 3, 2008, to help taxicab drivers offset the high cost of gasoline.

The surcharge could increase or decrease in $.50 increments depending on the average fuel cost for three consecutive weeks as reported by the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy (EIA). In 2014, fuel prices increased and exceeded $3.50, and on April 15, 2014 the current $1.00 per-trip fuel surcharge took effect.

According to the EIA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas has been below $3.50 for three consecutive weeks. Therefore, the $1.00 fuel surcharge has ended. Taxicab drivers are required to remove the fuel surcharge rate decal from their vehicles and drivers who continue to collect the per-trip surcharge after October 20, 2014, will be subject to the appropriate enforcement action.

Officers of the Miami-Dade County Regulatory and Economic Resources Department will be ensuring the fuel surcharge decals have been removed from vehicles. They will be at the taxi holding lot at Miami International Airport, PortMiami and other areas in Miami-Dade County removing decals. Decals will also be removed from vehicles at the Department’s vehicle inspection station.
