Solar Water Heater Program
Funded by the Board of County Commissioners, the Solar Water Heater Program provides for the installation of solar water heating systems in low income households. One of the most cost-effective ways to include renewable technologies into a building is by incorporating solar hot water.
A typical residential solar water-heating system reduces the need for conventional water heating by about two-thirds. It minimizes the expense of electricity, which in some cases can account for 20% of a household's income, for low-income residences, this can be a substantial impact.
The program utilizes passive type solar systems that require no maintenance. Originated by Commissioner Katy Sorenson to serve residents of District 8, the program now provides for a limited number of installations countywide.
Low-income residents, who are also Weatherization customers either already served or on the waiting list will be given priority consideration. Participation in the program is based on income.
Total household income for this programs is Low to Moderate which is 80% of the HUD Income and Mortgage Limits. Applicants must provide supporting documentation for proof of income, proof of ownership, social security card and photo identification for every member of the household.
Individuals interested in participating in the program may apply by contacting Energy Programs at 786-469-4730, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. An eligibility interviewer will take the initial application over the phone. Due to limited funding there are varying waiting periods for this program.
