CAA provides home weatherization assistance , through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Florida Department of Community Affairs. The program is designed to reduce energy consumption in the home. By reducing the energy bills of low-income families as opposed to offering aid, weatherization reduces dependency and liberates these funds for spending on more pressing family issues. On average, weatherization reduces overall energy bills by $358 per year at current prices. This spending, in turn, spurs low-income communities toward job growth and economic development.
Specific energy conservation measures include: installing or adding attic insulation; repairing or replacing deteriorated exterior doors and windows; installing thresholds and weather-stripping; installing low flow showerheads and pipe insulation on water heater lines; installing water heater jackets; repairing a/c ducts; replacing a/c filters; installing energy efficient light bulbs; and replacing inefficient air conditioners, refrigerators and water heaters.
The program currently serves an average of 90 homes each year depending on the size of the project and the services needed. In order to qualify for this program, the applicants total household income must not exceed 150% of the U.S. Poverty Guidelines. Senior citizens and families with children under 12 years of age, will be given priority. Applicants will be required to provide supporting documentation for proof of income, proof of home ownership, social security card and/or photo identification for every member of the household; a current utility bill is also required.
Individuals interested in participating in the program may apply by contacting CAA's Energy Programs at 786-469-4730 (Monday thru Friday from 8:00am - 5:00pm). An eligibility interviewer will take the initial application over the phone. Due to limited funding there are varying waiting periods for this program.
