The Miami-Dade County Home Rule Charter was adopted in 1957 -- essentially becoming the "constitution" for Miami-Dade County. Section 9.08 of the Home Rule Charter requires that the Board review the Charter at least once every five-year period to determine whether or not there is a need for revision of the Charter.
To fulfill its obligation under the Charter, on April 24, 2007, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution R-462-07 creating a Charter Review Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of 21 members including the Mayor and each Board member or his/her designee, as well as designees from the four largest municipalities and three from the Miami-Dade League of Cities.
The Task Force is charged with reviewing the Charter and submitting to the Board of County Commissioners recommendations setting forth any proposed amendments or revisions to the Charter. The Task Force adopted 15 issues of study during this Charter Review process, and encourages public input.
The Initial Report of the Charter Review Task Force was provided to the Board of County Commissioners on October 31, 2007, and the Final Report of the Charter Review Task Force was provided to the Board of County Commissioners on January 29, 2008. |
