Fernando Figueredo - Director
Fernando Figueredo is Director of Communications and External Affairs for Miami-Dade County. Prior to that, he was the Chair of the Public Relations and Advertising Faculty in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University. He is a distinguished professional in strategic communications and crisis management with extensive experience in academia as well as managing communications teams in the mass communications industry.
Figueredo’s experience includes the development and implementation of public relations and advertising campaigns with a global strategic communications focus for such prestigious multinationals as AOL, AT&T, BellSouth, Ford, Hewlett Packard, Lucent Technologies, MasterCard, Merck, Microsoft, Volkswagen, among others. He has also been instrumental in the development of economic development and tourism campaigns for countries such as Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, in addition to major global cities such as the City of Miami, Buenos Aires, and Seville, Spain.
Prior to joining FIU, Figueredo was a partner with Porter Novelli, a global public relations agency headquartered in NY with offices in 62 countries, where he was the Managing Director for the 17 country network of agencies in Latin America. He also led the Multicultural practice for the agency. In addition to profit and loss (P&L) responsibilities, he also formed and led the Crisis Management Task Force for the Latin America region.
Previous to that, Figueredo served as Vice President of Corporate Communications for America Online-Latin America, a publicly traded joint venture (NASDAQ: AOLA) between AOL and the Cisneros Group of Companies, which is one of the top multimedia companies in Latin America. He was responsible for all public relations and corporate communications activities, including all financial and consumer communications in the U.S., Latin America and European markets. As such, he was the principal spokesperson to the global news media. He was also responsible for U.S. Hispanic market initiatives.
Before moving to AOLA, Figueredo held a similar position with Lucent Technologies, where he served as Vice President of Corporate Communications for Lucent’s International Divisions from 1999 to 2000, and for the Americas from 1995 to 1999. Prior to that, he served as AT&T's Region Director of Public Relations in the Caribbean and Latin America, a position he took after serving for two years as AT&T’s Director of Hispanic Consumer Communications for the Eastern Region of the United States, based out of Miami. He began his career at BellSouth, where held engineering, marketing and corporate assignments, where he reached the position of Director of Corporate and External Affairs prior to moving to AT&T.
Figueredo has been a speaker and panelist in numerous conferences and seminars. Most recently he was a keynote speaker at the 2011 Annual International Congress of Public Relations Professionals in Mexico City, the 2008 Public Relations Society of America Conference on Integrated and Multicultural Communications, and the 2005 Communications Festival of Antigua, one of the most prestigious international advertising and public relations conferences. He has won several awards, including the prestigious Silver Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America for the best “International Integrated-Communications Campaign” in 2000.
Figueredo holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of Seville in Spain, a master's degree in business administration from Florida International University with emphasis on marketing communications and a BS degree in industrial engineering from the University of Florida.
He has attended numerous senior level management seminars at prestigious institutions such as The London Business School, Babson University, Georgetown University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the Miami Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for the past six years, and is the incoming President for 2012. He has also served on the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors, and chaired a number of chamber committees.
