The availability of water is a vital component to the sustainable growth of Miami-Dade County. Making sure that water is available to our present and future residents require that we address water supply issues in compliance with all regional, state and federal regulations.
The overall goal of the Miami-Dade Water Use Efficiency Five-Year Plan is to prevent and reduce wasteful, uneconomical, impractical, or unreasonable use of water resources per Section 373.227, Florida Statutes
Miami-Dade’s water conservation program will address demand through water use efficiencies and supply through alternative water supply initiatives, including the implementation of reuse water projects.
Water use efficiency is being addressed through the Water Use Efficiency Five Year Plan. This plan is part of a long-range water conservation planning process which incorporates the goal of responsible stewardship of natural resources, while safeguarding the ongoing business practices of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD). It is a goal-based, accountable plan that is tailored to the needs of the MDWASD service area.
The purpose of this long-term planning effort is to achieve improved water use efficiency through implementation of proposed Best Management Practices that can substantially contribute to:
-
Accommodating future economic development and population growth while protecting the resource;
-
Reducing or deferring costs of maintaining and expanding water delivery, treatment, and disposal systems; and
-
Reducing energy and maintenance costs of MDWASD facilities
Several incentive programs will be implemented to encourage the efficient use of water. Proposed projects include: plumbing retrofits, landscape irrigation evaluations and residential and commercial water use evaluations and rebates.
