The Water Remetering Program (WRP) is a conservation mechanism based on an ordinance approved by the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners in September 1996.
It allows for the remetering of individual apartments and units in multi-family dwelling complexes and commercial properties where the individual tenants pay directly for the amount of water they use. At the same time, the program, through monitoring of the meters and the investigation of consumer complaints, ensures that users are fairly charged, and that billing practices are just and reasonable.
The program is a voluntary one, limited to properties served by the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department. Other municipalities may opt to participate.
Under the WRP, owners, property management companies and homeowners associations opt to have their individual units remetered. The Consumer Services Department (CSD) licenses the remetering companies and the properties. CSD enforcement officers protect the rights of all the parties by ensuring that the regulations (Water Remetering Ordinance 96-137) are followed.
