Sunpass Required in all Taxis Effective March 1st

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Effective March 1st, taxis in Miami-Dade County will be required to have a Sunpass transponder.   The requirement is a result of a resolution approved by the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners that authorized the Consumer Services Department (CSD) to establish a date by which all taxis are required to use Sunpass.  The resolution allows taxicab drivers, for the first time, to add tolls to the fares, but at the discounted Sunpass rate.

According to Joe Mora, CSD’s Division Director for Passenger Transportation Regulation, taxicab passengers will benefit from drivers using Sunpass by allowing them to arrive at their destinations as quickly as possible time and at the lowest cost. Drivers also will benefit by going from one fare to the next more quickly.

Taxi drivers that do not have Sunpass installed are subject to fines and enforcement action.

For further information or to file a for-hire complaint please contact the CSD at 305-375-3677 or visit our website at http://www.miamidade.gov/csd/
