The Gender Pricing Ordinance and the Dry Cleaning and Laundering Ordinance prohibit dry cleaning businesses from charging different prices for goods or services based solely on the customer’s gender. However, these laws do allow price differences based on the time it takes to dry-clean or launder a garment, the difficulty involved and/or the cost to the cleaner.
Under these ordinances customers have 30 days after receipt of their garments to notify the cleaner in writing of any claim for loss, damage or delay. The business must satisfy or reject a claim within 30 days of receipt of the claim.
Customers also have the right to sue a dry cleaner for $200 minimum or three times the actual damages.
