    Food Product Labeling / Packaging

    Any commodity that is offered for sale in package form must have a label indicating the following:

    • Identity of the commodity, unless readily identifiable through the package;
    • Net quantity of the contents; and
    • Name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

    Packages containing lots with random weights, measures, or counts must show the price per single unit. For further assistance, please contact the Consumer Mediation Center at 305-375-3677.

    Grocery Stores
    Through a program of ongoing inspection of grocery stores, the Consumer Services Department works to prevent, and where necessary correct, violations of the Uniform Trade Standards laws and the weights and measures regulations. Some of the laws governing the operation of grocery stores relate to labeling, freshness dating and visibility of the cash register screen.

    Perishable Food Shelf Life
    It is unlawful to package perishable foods for sale without a clearly specified, uncoded, calendar date indicating when the shelf life of the product will expire.

    TOP

    Meat Identification
    Vendors are required to identify meat products in a manner that is not misleading or deceptive. Previously frozen meat must be labeled as such.

    Kosher Food Product Sales
    It is unlawful to offer any food product for sale which is falsely represented to be Kosher. This law addresses truth in Kosher advertising, display and handling requirements. Establishments that offer both Kosher and non-Kosher food cannot represent themselves as Kosher unless certain requirements are met, including posting of an exterior sign that says "Kosher and Non-Kosher Products Sold Here". Kosher establishments must file with the Consumer Services Department a document from a supervising rabbi or rabbinical organization stating that the establishment complies with the dietary requirements of the Code of Jewish Laws.

    Weights and Measures
    Uniform Trade Standards laws establish requirements for weights and measures. On an ongoing basis, enforcement officers from the Consumer Protection Division inspect and test packages which are offered for sale to determine that these packages contain the amounts represented.

    For further assistance, please contact the Consumer Mediation Center at 305-375-3677.
