For-Hire Chauffeurs' Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions will be on the exam?

The exam is made up of  50 multiple choice questions for Jitney, PMC, NE/STS, Private School Bus, Renewing Taxi and Limousine classes; 100 questions for TCAP (new taxi drivers) and TIPS (new limousine drivers).

How much time will I have to take the exam?

For the 50 question exam you have 1.5 hours and for the 100 question exam you have 2.5 hours.

What subjects will be covered on the exam?

Depending on the industry that you will work for you may be tested on the following subjects:  Americans with Disabilities Act, Customer Service, Miami-Dade County Code Rules and Regulations, Safety, and Geography/Map Reading.

What is a passing grade on the exam?

A passing grade is 70% or better.

How many questions can I miss on the exam and still pass?

You can miss 15 questions on the 50 question exam; you can miss 30 questions on the 100 question exam.

If I fail the exam, how many times can I take it again?

Should you fail the exam, there is a $15 fee for each time you take the exam thereafter.  Depending on the course, the re-exam may be weekly or bimonthly.

What will happen if I am caught cheating on the exam?

If found cheating on the exam, you will not be eligible to re-apply for one year (Miami-Dade County Code Sec. 31-303. No refund will be given.

When will I not need to take a class and exam to renew my license?

Every other year you will need to take a course and exam to renew your license unless you have had your for-hire chauffeur license in Miami-Dade County for 20 consecutive years. This regulation does not apply to private school bus chauffeurs.

Can I refuse to transport people with disabilities who are accompanied by a service animal?

You cannot refuse to transport a person with a disability that has a service animal for any reason.  It would be illegal to refuse to transport them and you can be fined up to $500 and 60 days of imprisonment (s. 775.082, s. 775.083).  NOTE:  You cannot charge people with disabilities any additional charges for transporting them.

How can I tell if an animal is really a service animal and not just a pet?

If you are not certain that an animal is a service animal, you may ask if the animal is required because of a disability. NOTE: Most service animals wear a harness.
