    Locksmith Individual Application for Initial and Renewal Permit

    Who Must Apply

    Any person working as a locksmith in Miami-Dade County.


    When to Apply

    Monday through Friday (except holidays) 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    Initial applicants must apply in person.  Renewal applicants can apply in person or by mail.

    Experience Requirement

    Initial applicants must have been an apprentice locksmith for a minimum of one (1) year or must provide documentary proof of being actively engaged as a locksmith or a locksmith supervisor for one (1) year out of the ten (10) years preceding the application for a locksmith license. Verification of employment or experience or both shall be completed by the individual’s supervisor or submission of at least three (3) affidavits from persons affiliated with the locksmith industry attesting to at least one(1) year of locksmith experience of the individual.

    License Fee (nonrefundable)

    Initial license fee ranges from $25.00 to $47.92 based on month of birth.  A one (1) year license renewal is $25.00 and a two (2) year license renewal is $50.00.
    Cash will not be accepted. Fees can be paid by check, money order or cashiers check made payable to the “Board of County Commissioners”. Renewal applicants applying in person and initial applicants may also pay by credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
    Locksmith business owners to include corporate principals are exempt from paying the license fee.


    Background Check

    Initial applicants must complete a criminal background check and have two (2) passport photos taken as part of the application process.  Information regarding these requirements will be provided when the application is submitted.

    Incomplete Applications

    If the application process is not completed within 60 days from the date that the application was filed with the Consumer Services Department, the application will be considered abandoned and closed and a new application and fee will be required.

    Late Applications

    A late fee of $3 per week, up to a maximum of $25, will be required for each week that the renewal application is submitted after the expiration of the current license. The late fee is in addition to the license renewal fee.

    License Changes

    Changes in any material aspect of the locksmith license shall be provided to the Consumer Services Department in writing along with proof of the change and a $10.00 fee, if replacement of the license is required, within thirty (30) days of the change.

    License Card

    Upon successful completion of the application process, each locksmith will be issued a license card that shall be displayed on the locksmith at all times when performing locksmith work, whether on or off the premises of the individual’s primary place of work.
