Consumer Wise

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Consumer Wise, the newsletter of the Miami-Dade County Consumer Services Department. Every issue will focus on a specific area of interest to consumers. In this issue we cover topics relating to credit reporting. Did you know that you are entitled to a FREE credit report every year? Regular features will include consumer tips from Leonard Elias, the Miami-Dade County Consumer Advocate, and real life tales of how we work to resolve consumer complaints. I hope that you enjoy your first edition of Consumer Wise.

Cathy Grimes Peel is the Director of the Miami-Dade County Consumer Services Department. The Department functions as the consumer information and protection arm for Miami-Dade County residents and visitors.

Reading and Understanding Your Credit Report

We are midway through 2006.  Have you accessed your free credit reports yet? The federal Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act provides you with access to one free credit report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting agencies; Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax on an annual basis.

Requesting Your Free Annual Credit Report

The three nationwide credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion have set up one central website, toll-free telephone number and mailing address for ordering your free annual report.

Credit: Do You Really Know the Score?

What is a credit score? A credit score is simply a number based on information in a consumer’s credit report. Your score is determined by reviewing your salary, employment history, history of late payments, non-payment of loans, current level of debt, length of credit history, number of bad checks written, history of applying for credit, etc. Credit scores do not reflect personal characteristics such as age and gender.

How to Dispute Your Credit Report Errors

If you find an error on your credit report, such as an account that isn’t yours or an incorrect amount, mail a completed dispute form that comes with the report or a letter to the credit agency which reported the error, enclosing a copy of your report with the disputed item(s) circled.

Will my credit score drop if I check my credit?

If I close old accounts, will that improve my credit score?

Once I satisfy an old bill, will that debt be removed as negative history on my credit report?
