Consumer Wise

The Miami-Dade Consumer Services Department wants all consumers to be Smart Holiday Consumers.

While the holidays can be fun, amid the rush, consumers can become victims of bad deals, excess debt, scams or worse...yes, the holiday season has arrived. Evenings and weekends are about to be filled with trips to the mall, visiting relatives, and happy children. The holidays are so busy that you may not have time to finish everything you need to do, let alone make time for thoughtful preparation. Internet shoppers who stop and think before they buy can prevent an online Scrooge from interfering with their purchases and ultimately, their holiday fun.

In this edition of Consumer Wise we offer several tips that we hope you'll keep in mind so your celebrations will be fun for everyone. Happy Holidays!

Internet Shopping

Where can you shop for virtually anything you need, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, or purchase an item from a store halfway around the world without leaving home? The simplicity, selection, and convenience of online shopping have made the internet an attractive option for purchasing. However, the convenience of internet shopping is not without pitfalls.

Gift Cards - To Give or Not to Give?!

Before you purchase or if you receive a gift card this holiday season, there are some things you should consider. Different gift cards have different terms and conditions.

Rebates

What a deal!  You see a great deal advertised as a result of a manufacturer’s rebate and you can not purchase the item quickly enough. After mailing your rebate form, months pass and you still do not receive your rebate check. You call and write to the company, but nothing you do seems to make your rebate happen.

Return Policies

Part of the fun of the holiday season is finding the right gift for those you care about.  However, sometimes that “right” gift turns out to be not so right or even wrong. That is why it is especially important for shoppers to be aware of the refund/return policies of the stores with which they do business.
