On April 18, 2009, more than 8,500 volunteers - the most ever - participated in the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day throughout 29 sites alongside the shoreline and nearby islands of Biscayne Bay. Together, they collected tons of trash, some of which was sent to a recycling facility.
A number of interesting items like broken strollers and lounge chairs were found at some of the sites. In the end, the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day 2009 was declared a huge success and we would like to thank all of the volunteers who came out and helped clean up our precious Bay.
We would also like to thank all of the sponsors, partners and DERM staff who made this event possible. To put the magnitude of the impact of this event, one volunteer said, "You don't really want to find trash on our beaches, but when you do, I feel good to be doing my part by cleaning it up!"
We hope to see everyone again at Baynanza 2010, and in the meantime, please consider doing your part all year round.
