Environmentally Endangered Lands contain natural forest, wetland or native plant communities, rare and endangered plants and animals, endemic species, endangered species habitat, a diversity of species, outstanding geologic or other natural features, or land which functions as an integral and sustaining component of an existing ecosystem.
Acquiring, protecting, and restoring these habitats is important to all of us. Not only are we protecting important biodiversity, but also “open green space,” in a city where growth and expansion seem limitless. Open space is important for livability, but also for the recharge of our drinking water aquifer and to prevent flooding during heavy rains. Especially important, is preserving the natural history of South Florida – diverse wildlife, lush native plants, and the serenity of natural settings -- for the enjoyment of future generations.
