What is the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit used for?
This permit is utilized by DERM to monitor non-residential facilities and enforce the Miami-Dade Sewer Discharge Standards of grease waste discharged to the sanitary sewer when the flow is less than 25,000 gallons per day.
Why is the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit necessary?
Prior to 1994, Miami-Dade County experienced a number of grease related overflow problems that needed to be resolved. The solution began with the creation of the grease discharge program. Since the program began, the number of grease related problems have decreased and the number of grease interceptors in the county has increased.
What other permits are needed for the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit Application before I can start work?
No other permit is required. However, depending on the type of facility, there may be other permits required for construction and/or installation of a pretreatment system. You must contact DERM Plan Review at 786.315.2800 for additional information prior to construction.
How long does it take to process the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit Application?
If brought in personally, usually no more than 20 minutes.
How much are the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit Application fees?
Fees are based on actual or calculated water flow. The calculation is derived from the number of seats or the facility area in some cases. Please see DERM Fee Schedule .
How long is the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit valid?
Grease Discharge Permits are valid for one or two years depending on the fee amount; all other permits are for one year only.
Are there wellfield restrictions for the Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) Permit?
This permit is NOT required for IW-6 Program facilities, which are facilities on septic systems located within wellfield protection areas.
If my facility is located within a municipality, do I still need a Grease Discharge Operating (GDO) permit?
Yes, all non-residential facilities within municipalities with the exception of City of North Miami require DERM’s GDO permits.
