    Tree Removal Permit

What is the Tree Removal Permit used for?

Tree removal permits are required for the cutting down, bulldozing, removal or relocation of any tree in Miami-Dade County, except for trees that are located within unincorporated Miami Dade County and are on the prohibited species list. Some municipalities have their own tree ordinances and may require a permit for the removal of prohibited species. Permits are also required for any work in any designated Natural Forest Community (i.e. pinelands, hammocks). DERM may require the property owner to modify a site plan to preserve tree and forest resources.

A tree is defined as any woody or fibrous perennial plant having a minimum trunk dbh* of three inches or greater or with an Over All Height (OAH) of twelve or more feet.

    * DBH (Diameter at Breast Height): Trunk diameter measured at 4 1/2 feet above ground.

Why is the Tree Removal Permit necessary?

All 'regular-sized' trees you remove -- except for the exempt or prohibited species -- must be replaced with an equal amount (100%) of tree canopy. 'Specimen-sized' trees require double canopy replacement.

How much are the Tree Removal Permit fees?

A non-refundable application fee (based on zoning) and initial inspection fee is required upon permit application submission. Additional fees may be charged at the time of permit issuance.

How long is the Tree Removal Permit valid?

One year, but can be renewed by contacting DERM.

Which municipalities have their own tree ordinances?

Some municipalities have their own tree ordinances and may require a permit for the removal of prohibited species:

    • Coral Gables (305-460-5235 Building & Zoning) - Plans must be taken through landscape committee and maintenance covenant required.
    • Homestead (305-224-4842 Public Works) - Only allows City planting on right-of-way
    • Miami (305-575-5261 Public Works)
    • Miami Springs (305-805-5170, option #3 Public Works Tree Section) - Has an ordinance that allows planting on the right-of-way and requires plan approval from list of pre-approved species.
    • North Miami (305-891-9334 Parks ) - Requires applicant to do utility checks and the city will sell Oak trees at half price. City will then take over maintenance of the tree. City tree inventory is on database.
    • North Miami Beach (305-948-2948 Beautification)
    • Pinecrest (305-669-6916 Public Works) - Species planned by landscape committee and Installed by City Contractor.
    • South Miami (305-663-6350 Public Works)

How do I contact DERM for more information about Tree Removals?
