    Fuel Efficiency
    • Don’t top off your gas tank when filling up. When you smell gas, it means some highly toxic substances are in the air. Once the nozzle clicks off the first time, the gas you're paying for (at these prices!) is not going into your tank. It's stuck in the hose, or getting ready to spill on the next person.
    • Regular tune-ups and maintenance checks will improve your vehicle’s performance and gas mileage.
    • Proper tire inflation will also get you better gas mileage. Check inside the driver’s side door for the manufacturer’s recommended tire inflation.
    • Carpool; share the cost, split the pollution.
    • If you can, go hybrid. You’ll get increased fuel efficiency (which saves you money) and reduced emissions without sacrificing comfort or performance.
    • When possible, ride a bike or walk. These are the best choices of all not only for our air but also for your health.
    • Combine errands into one trip and plan your route to limit driving time. It will cause less traffic congestion, less pollution and save you time.
    • Avoid high speeds: speeding increases air resistance, which requires more gas. You can improve your gas mileage about 15% by driving at 55 mph rather than 65 mph.
    • Accelerate slowly from a full stop. A jackrabbit start uses 50% more fuel.
    • Don’t “rev” the engine excessively. It wastes gas, producing even more emissions.
    • Avoid lengthy idling times. Turning off and starting an engine uses less gasoline than letting the engine idle for 30 seconds.
    • Clear out the trunk. Don’t let your car become a storage compartment with wheels.  For every 50 pounds of junk you lug around, you lose about ¼ MPG.
    • Tell a friend. One of the best ways to make a difference is to share your success in saving our air with your friends and co-workers. Point them to this web site or other great sources for ideas.
