Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

JackfruitDescription: A fast-growing evergreen tree with the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, reaching up to 36 inches long and 20 inches in diameter. The outside of the fruit is green or yellow when ripe. The fruit consists of large edible bulbs of yellow, banana-flavored flesh that encloses seeds.

Size: Medium to large (30-40 feet in height). Can be pruned to keep size smaller.

Location: Plant at least 30 feet from power lines and 16-22 feet from your house. Full sun with well-drained soil.

Salt tolerance: Low

Watering: Water during planting and for one year thereafter (see watering schedule in the "Dig In Miami-Dade County"  booklet). May need to water during fruiting if under drought conditions.

Fertilization: Do not fertilize until 6 months after planting. Call 305-248-3311 ext.228 for fertilizing information specific to your tree.

Pruning: Wait one year to prune. If staked, remove after 6 months.
