Miami-Dade Commissioners Jordan and Edmonson to personally see to distribution of food collection drive for Haiti

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade County Commission Vice Chairwoman Barbara J. Jordan and Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson will fly to Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Monday, August 4 to take part in the distribution of almost 20 tons of food they helped collect last month. Commissioner Jordan authored a resolution, supported by Commissioner Edmonson, that responded to the food crisis in Haiti with a two-week food drive. Donations of rice, powdered milk, bottled water, and other items poured in from Miami-Dade County residents.

“I’m so proud that Miami-Dade County residents really opened their hearts to our island neighbors in their time of need,” said Commissioner Jordan. “Many Haitians live on less than one dollar a day. This food will go a long way in helping so many who have been suffering from starvation.”

Monetary contributions in the amount of $15,000 were also collected by the non-profit organization, World Vision, for the cause. Food For The Poor (FFP), one of the largest international aid agencies in the U.S. and a world leader in programs to help the poor, shipped the collected items to Haiti and is coordinating its distribution there. The commissioners will visit FFP’s Port-au-Prince warehouse, participate in the food distribution, and tour Cite Soleil, one of Haiti’s most impoverished communities.

“It is heartbreaking to think that families just a few miles away from our shores are living in such desolate conditions,” said Commissioner Edmonson. “We wish we could give food to everyone who needs it, but we hope what we are able to give will make a difference for as many families as possible.”

Angel Aloma, FFP Executive Director, will join the commissioners on their trip.

“Thanks to generous donations, Food For The Poor is able to feed millions of destitute children and their families in Haiti,” said Aloma.  “But sadly, the struggle and the suffering continue.  I pray that more people hear the call to help the starving people in Haiti, but hope for the day when the words ‘poverty’ and ‘starvation’ disappear from our world.”

A press conference will take place at Miami International Airport upon the commissioners’ return (approximately 8:30 p.m.) on August 4. For more information about the trip, please contact Commissioner Jordan’s downtown office at 305-375-5694, Commissioner Edmonson’s district office at 305-636-2331, or Food For The Poor at (954) 427-2222.
