Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan donates food and toys to needy families this holiday season


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- On Monday morning, December 21, five deserving families in District 1 received an early holiday gift from Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan. The selected families visited the commissioner's district office, where they were each given baskets of food, bicycles, tickets to Santa's Enchanted Forest, and a $200 gift certificate for Toys R' Us. Commissioner Jordan chose the families based on need.

"These were residents in my district who were going through difficult times, and really needed something uplifting to help them through the holidays," said Commissioner Jordan. "Now, the heads of these households can provide some essential items like food, and also give their children some special gifts this year under the Christmas tree."

While Commissioner Jordan was not able to present the gifts personally due to a family emergency, she called all the families and wished them the best over the holidays. Commissioner Jordan has reached out to families across her district this year, distributing 30 bicycles and more than 400 toys to children in need. Among the recipients included children at the new Ophelia Brown Head Start Center, which opened in October of this year.

The activities are part of an annual toy giveaway the commissioner organizes to spread goodwill in District 1. Toys and other donations were provided by the following sponsors: Marines Toys for Tots, Walmart, Camacol, The Adler Group, The Dolphin Stadium Foundation, and the Florida Marlins.  

The Holmes Family was one of five families in District 1 chosen to receive food and gift donations by Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan.
