(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Twenty-seven new recruits filed into the North Dade Regional Library on Monday, June 13, 2011 for a two-day orientation, ready to take on the real world. The 27 individuals, all students from the ages of 16-21, will get a taste of the working world through Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan's 6th Annual Summer Youth Internship Initiative Program (SYII).
The SYII Program advocates a strong commitment to the professional development of students from District 1. This summer, Commissioner Jordan will provide high school and college students with the opportunity to work and build partnerships with some of the district's most prominent business leaders for an 8-week period. SYII business partners include Lawrence Wright and Partners, Warren Henry Automobiles, Ave, AA Acquisitions, LLC, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Orange Bowl Committee, Calder Race Course, Larry Willis Insurance Agency, Dwight Stephenson Construction, EAC Consulting, North Dade Federal Credit Union, Experience Aviation, Florida Marlins, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, Miami Dolphins, El Dorado Furniture, GJB Consulting, Lehman Toyota/Scion/Mazda, and Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan's office.
"The experience gained through this program is invaluable. These students are given hands-on experience working in the private sector and gain the tools necessary to become successful in the workforce," said Commissioner Jordan. "Interns who have participated in my internship program have gone on to become full-time employees for SYII business partners. In this economy, this kind of experience will put a job candidate ahead of the pack."
The SYII is a holistic summer employment program. Following a constructive interview process, students are required to participate in a two-day orientation to learn business etiquette, financial literacy, resume writing, as well as tips for improving interviewing skills.
As an additional requirement, students participate in community service and team building projects, where they learn the importance of civic involvement and team work.
