(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Miami-Dade County Commissioners have approved a resolution by Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan to extend the boundaries of her neighborhood beautification program to the borders of her entire district. Previously known as the Opa-locka Triangle Area Beautification Demonstration Program, it assists homeowners with up to $5,900 of exterior painting and landscaping should they meet specific income requirements.
Miami-Dade's Community Action Agency (CAA) administers this program, and selects contractors to make improvements with financing through the Housing Finance Authority. Property owners can select one of eight color combinations for the exterior of their home, and one of three landscaping choices. In order to qualify, applicants must:
- Own the home that will be included in the beautification project
- Own a detached single-family home (not an apartment or duplex)
- Not own any other investment properties
- Meet the maximum income requirements (listed in attachment)
Since 2005, the Opa-locka Program has been successful in providing assistance to 85 homeowners to enhance and improve the exteriors of their homes. Originally, Commissioner Jordan selected the boundaries of the embattled Opa-locka Triangle area to assist homeowners in need who could not afford to make home improvements. However, $1,150,000 in funding still remains in the program, and the economic downturn has spurred the commissioner to expand the program's reach to residents throughout her district, including the City of Miami Gardens and portions of unincorporated Miami-Dade County, North Miami and North Miami Beach.
"There are many low-income families, elderly and disabled residents in my district who would benefit greatly from modest home repairs," said Commissioner Jordan. "I'm proud to now be able to offer this service district-wide."
Interested applicants must provide a copy of their last W-2 if employed, a full month of paycheck stubs for every person living in the household if employed, a copy of award letters if unemployed such as retirement pension or Social Security benefits; copies of picture ID, birth certificates, and social security card from every household member; a copy of the household's most recent mortgage statement, and proof that all property taxes are current and paid.
