(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- A local resident's request to beautify an open lot near her home was fulfilled by Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan and several volunteers on August 20, 2011. Ms. Grace Scott of the North Miami area contacted Miami-Dade County hoping to plant some trees in a lot located at N.W. 13th Avenue and 145th Street. The result was the "District 1 Day of Service," in which Commissioner Jordan and volunteers from Greater Miami Service Corps, Teen Up-Ward Bound, and Citizens for a Better South Florida planted various trees and foliage. In total, the group of about 25 volunteers planted 30 trees and 20 shrubs in the open lot. Volunteers even planted a few trees in nearby residents' yards to spruce up the neighborhood.
"I'm glad Ms. Scott brought this open lot to the County's attention as it was in definite need of some TLC," said Commissioner Jordan. "Now with some new trees planted by our wonderful volunteers, the neighborhood is looking great!"
