A steady stream of people squeezed, smelled, and sampled fruits and vegetables at the North Pointe YMCA’s first farmers’ market on Saturday. In total, 250 people attended the four-hour event that showcased dragon fruit, cucumbers, beans, corn, lettuce, and an assortment of organic cookies.
“By all accounts, this display of healthy and nutritious food was well received by neighbors,” said Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan. ”We have made a commitment to hold a farmers’ market on an on-going basis.
“This partnership with the YMCA is a natural fit,” she added. “The YMCA is about healthy living, and I am trying to move District 1 into that state of mind.”
YMCA officials and Commissioner Jordan are in the process of identifying future sponsors who have an interest in residents remaining healthy. They want to engage in partnerships that will benefit the community and help promote a healthy lifestyle.
