Reading high on agenda for Teen Upward Bound Program

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Reading. It is one of the fundamentals of learning in our society. Today, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan stood alongside forty students as they listened to her read, and as they read to their peers. Commissioner Jordan treated the students, who are a part of the Teen Upward Bound Program, to Mother to Son, a poem by renown Author and Poet Langston Hughes.

"Children nowadays are consumed with digital gadgets," said Commissioner Jordan. "It was refreshing to see them stimulating their minds and interacting with one another. Equally as important was their willingness to participate by reading aloud."

The students are participants in the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program, which provides summer and after-school enrichment through a model curriculum that supports children and families through five essential components. Those components include: High quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; social action and civil engagement; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
