Commissioner Barbara Jordan Issues Statement Regarding Re-Election to District 1 Seat

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
"The residents of District 1 have spoken. Clearly, they want me to continue addressing their issues and meeting their needs. We have made a lot of progress in District 1, but still work remains. I am ecstatic about this win. I can see the maturity of our voters in the way they turned out to the polls. I was confident that the residents in District 1 were wise enough to make their decision based solely on my track record, and not because of the influence of billionaire Norman Braman.

I would like to thank the voters of District 1 for entrusting me with helping to shape and guide their communities. I am grateful to everyone who signed an endorsement card, hosted a fundraiser or donated to my campaign. I would especially like to thank the current and former elected officials who stood by me. Those supporters included former U.S. Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek, my predecessor Commissioner Betty T. Ferguson, Florida State Senator Oscar Braynon II, former Congressman Kendrick Meek, former Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, former Mayor of the City of Miami and current County Commissioner for District 7 Xavier L. Suarez, City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones, and U.S. Representative Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

My bid for re-election was also made possible through the hard work and dedication of many organizations and unions that stepped in and made a difference. I would like to thank the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), Police Benevolent Association (PBA), Miami-Dade Firefighters, SAVE Dade, Service Employees International Union of Florida (SEIU), Transit Workers Union (TWU), and United Teachers of Dade (UTD).

Lastly, I'd like to thank my campaign workers who worked Tuesday, and the weeks leading up to my re-election. They were relentless, dedicated and committed to me serving a third term.

I look forward to working on behalf of the residents of District 1. I truly believe that we are 'One District, One Community!"
