Commissioner Jordan to Spearhead Guard Dog License Legislation
(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Continuing her quest to safeguard canines in Miami-Dade County, Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan will ask her colleagues to pass legislation to protect guard dogs. On Tuesday, March 5, Commissioner Jordan will propose an ordinance regulating the treatment of guard dogs by companies that use the animals to protect their property. Similar to ordinances passed by Broward and Palm Beach counties, Miami-Dade’s legislation will crack down on guard dog companies and owners whose dogs live and operate in deplorable conditions.
“As a result of the recent straw ballot vote that passed regarding no-kill shelters, Miami-Dade County residents have shown compassion for its canines,” said Commissioner Jordan. “We’re taking this action on behalf of our residents who want us to reach out and help these animals.”
According to the proposed ordinance, guard dog companies and owners must register and receive a license for each guard dog patrolling a non-residential property. Registrations must be renewed annually and guard dogs must be checked by a veterinarian every six months to determine if the animal is healthy and physically fit to perform the duties of a guard dog.
“This is an ordinance that is long overdue,” said Commissioner Jordan. “While there may be other issues that we need to address as it relates to protecting our dogs, with this legislation and with future efforts, I believe that we are moving in the right direction.”
