Statement from Commissioner Barbara Jordan regarding the Charleston, South Carolina massacre

“The horrific massacre of nine people at the storied Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina broke the hearts of a nation. Emanuel AME, a pillar in the Charleston community, is the oldest AME church in the south. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to all of the families affected by this senseless act of violence. Unfortunately, no one seems to have the solution to end similar heinous crimes plaguing our communities. While this country mourns the lives of these nine parishioners, we must continue to engage in forthright discussions regarding racism and gun violence in America. This is not only a tragedy for the Charleston community, but it is a tragedy for the nation. We must all keep the grieving families of the Charleston victims in our prayers during this difficult time.”
